Smart TV Repair Guide: Common Issues & Solutions

Quick Repairing Team 25 January 2024 30 reads

Smart TVs have become very common in Indian homes. They let you watch Netflix, YouTube, Hotstar, and many other apps. But like any electronic device, they can have problems.

Here are some common Smart TV issues and what you can do about them.

Problem 1: TV Not Connecting to WiFi

You open Netflix and the TV says no internet connection. This is very common. Here is what to check:

First, check if your WiFi is working on other devices like your phone. If other devices are working, the problem is with the TV. If nothing is working, the problem is with your WiFi router.

For the TV, try these steps:

  • Turn off the TV and unplug it for 2 minutes. Plug it back and try again.
  • Go to the network settings and forget the WiFi network. Then connect again with the password.
  • Move the router closer to the TV. WiFi signal gets weak through walls.
  • Update the TV software. Sometimes a software update fixes connection problems.
  • Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back.

If none of these work, the WiFi card inside the TV might be bad. A technician can replace it. This costs around ₹800 to ₹2000.

Problem 2: TV is Slow and Laggy

Smart TVs have a processor inside, just like a phone or computer. Over time, the TV can become slow. The apps take longer to open. The menu moves slowly.

This is usually because the TV memory is full. Here is how to fix it:

  • Close apps you are not using. Most Smart TVs let you see open apps and close them.
  • Delete apps you do not use.
  • Clear the cache of your apps. Go to settings and look for app management.
  • If the TV has a factory reset option, use it. This will delete everything and make the TV like new. You will have to log in again to your apps.

If the TV is still slow after a factory reset, the hardware inside might be too old for the latest apps. This is common in TVs that are 4 to 5 years old. In that case, you can use an external streaming device like a Fire Stick or Android box instead of buying a new TV.

Problem 3: TV Remote Not Working

The remote stops working and you cannot control your TV. This can be frustrating. Here are some things to try:

  • Change the batteries. This is the most common fix.
  • Check if there is something blocking the sensor on the TV. The sensor is usually at the bottom front.
  • Clean the remote and the TV sensor with a dry cloth.
  • If you have a smartphone, you can use a remote app. Many brands have a remote app you can download.
  • Some remotes need to be paired again. Check the TV manual to see how to pair it.

If the remote is physically damaged or dropped, it may need to be replaced. A universal remote costs around ₹200 to ₹500. An original brand remote costs ₹500 to ₹1500.

Problem 4: Apps Keep Crashing or Freezing

You are watching a show and the app freezes. Or the app closes by itself and goes back to the home screen. This happens often.

Try these fixes:

  • Update the app. Open the app store and check for updates.
  • Uninstall the app and install it again.
  • Clear the app cache from settings.
  • Check if your internet speed is good enough for streaming. Netflix and YouTube need at least 5 Mbps for HD quality.

If only one app is giving problems, the issue is with that app. If all apps are crashing, the TV software might need an update or a factory reset.

Problem 5: No Picture or No Sound

These problems can happen suddenly. Here is how to figure out what is wrong:

If you have picture but no sound:

  • Check if the TV is muted. Press the mute button.
  • Check the volume level.
  • If you are using external speakers or a soundbar, check if they are turned on and connected properly.
  • Try a different HDMI port or a different cable.

If you have sound but no picture:

  • This is usually a backlight problem. Shine a torch near the screen. If you see a faint picture, the backlight is not working.
  • Check if the TV is on the correct input source. Sometimes it changes by mistake.

If you have no picture and no sound:

  • The TV might not be getting power. Check the power cord.
  • The power supply board inside the TV might be damaged.

Tips to Keep Your Smart TV Working Well

  • Keep the TV software updated.

  • Use a voltage stabilizer if power in your area fluctuates.
