TV Screen Problems: What They Mean and What to Do

You turn on your TV and something looks wrong. Maybe the screen is black but you can hear sound. Maybe there are lines across the screen. Maybe the picture is very dim. These problems can be worrying.

TV screens are delicate. But not every problem means you need to buy a new TV. Let us look at common screen problems and what they mean.

TV Has Sound but No Picture

This is one of the most common complaints. You can hear the news or the show but the screen is black. This usually means one of two things.

First, check if the backlight is working. Shine a torch or a phone light very close to the screen. If you can see the picture very faintly, then the backlight has failed. The TV is working but the light behind the screen is not. A technician can replace the backlight LEDs. This costs around ₹1500 to ₹4000 depending on the TV size.

Second, if you shine a light and see nothing at all, the problem is with the main board or the display panel. The main board can be repaired or replaced for around ₹1000 to ₹3000. But if the display panel itself is damaged, repairing it can cost almost as much as a new TV.

Lines on the Screen

Sometimes you see vertical lines or horizontal lines on the screen. This can happen suddenly or get worse over time.

Vertical lines (lines going up and down) are usually a problem with the display panel or the ribbon cable that connects the panel to the board. Sometimes a technician can fix this by reseating the ribbon cable. Other times the panel needs replacement.

Horizontal lines (lines going left to right) are often a sign of a bad display panel. Fixing this is usually expensive. If the TV is old, it might be better to get a new one.

If you see one or two thin lines, the TV can still be used. Many people live with a few lines rather than replacing the TV. But if the lines are wide or there are many, it is hard to watch.

TV Screen is Very Dim

If your TV screen looks very dark or dim even at full brightness, the problem is likely the backlight LEDs. Over time, these LEDs can burn out or get weak.

A technician can open the TV and replace the faulty LEDs. The cost depends on how many LEDs need to be replaced. It is usually between ₹1500 and ₹5000.

Sometimes the problem is not the LEDs but the power supply board that sends power to them. A technician can check this easily.

Screen Has a Black Spot or Bleeding

If you see a dark spot on the screen, especially if the TV was hit or pressed hard, the LCD panel is damaged inside. This is called a dead pixel or a damaged LCD layer. Unfortunately, there is no fix for this. The whole screen panel needs to be replaced.

If you see light bleeding from the edges of the screen, this is called backlight bleed. It is common in cheap TVs. Some bleed is normal. But if it is very bad and bothers you while watching, a technician can try to fix it by adjusting the panel.

TV Screen Flickers

A flickering screen can be caused by many things:

• Loose cable connections inside the TV
• Bad power supply board
• Faulty T-Con board (the board that controls the picture)
• Software or firmware issues in smart TVs

Try turning the TV off and on again. Unplug it for 5 minutes and plug it back. If the flickering stops, it was just a temporary glitch. If it keeps happening, call a technician.

Flickering can also be caused by a weak signal from your cable or DTH box. Check by using a different HDMI port or a different device.

Colors Look Wrong

If the colors on your TV look strange, it could be a setting problem or a hardware problem. First, check the picture settings on your TV. Someone might have changed the color, contrast, or brightness settings.

Go to the settings menu and look for picture reset. This will set everything back to normal. If the colors still look wrong, the problem could be with the T-Con board. A technician can test and replace it. It costs around ₹800 to ₹2500.

If the picture looks like a negative photo or colors are completely wrong, the main board might be damaged. This is less common but it happens.

How to Take Care of Your TV Screen

• Clean the screen with a soft dry cloth. Do not use water or cleaner directly on the screen.
• Do not press on the screen. The LCD panel is very delicate.
• Keep the TV away from direct sunlight and heat.
• Make sure the TV has good ventilation. Do not cover the vents.
• Use a voltage stabilizer if power in your area is not stable.
