You open your refrigerator and the milk feels warm. The vegetables look soft. The butter is melting. This is a stressful situation. Your food can go bad quickly if the fridge is not cold enough.
Dont panic. Many times the problem is simple. You can check a few things yourself before calling a technician. Let us go through them one by one.
Sometimes someone in the house changes the setting by mistake. Maybe a child turned the dial. Or maybe you bumped into it while cleaning. Check the temperature dial inside the fridge.
The ideal temperature for a fridge is between 2°C and 5°C. For the freezer, it should be around -18°C. If the dial is set to a warmer setting, turn it to a colder setting and wait a few hours to see if it helps.
If the fridge door does not close tightly, cold air escapes. The fridge has to work harder to stay cold. This can make the motor run non-stop and still the fridge may not cool properly.
Look at the door seal. The rubber gasket around the door should be clean and soft. If it is dirty, clean it with soap and water. If it is torn or hard, it needs to be replaced. A new gasket costs around ₹300 to ₹800.
Also check if there is something inside the fridge that is stopping the door from closing. A large bottle or a box can push the door open slightly.
This is a very common reason for cooling problems. The coils at the back of the fridge release heat. When they get covered with dust, the heat cannot escape. The fridge struggles to keep things cold.
Here is how to clean them:
Do this every three to six months. It helps the fridge run better and saves electricity too.
When you put too many things inside the fridge, air cannot move around freely. Cold air needs space to travel. If the fridge is packed full, some areas will not get cold enough.
Try to remove some items. Let there be some empty space inside. Air should be able to flow from the top to the bottom.
Also, do not put hot food directly in the fridge. Let it cool down first. Putting hot food in the fridge makes the motor work extra hard to bring the temperature down.
Most modern fridges have a fan inside that moves cold air from the freezer to the fridge section. If this fan stops working, the fridge will not get cold even if the freezer is working fine.
Open the fridge door and press the door switch. You should hear the fan running. If you hear nothing, the fan might be broken. This needs a technician to fix.
If you checked everything above and the fridge is still not cooling, the problem could be low refrigerant gas or a bad compressor. These are serious problems that need a professional.
Signs of low gas:
Signs of a bad compressor:
Gas refilling costs around ₹800 to ₹2000 depending on the type of gas. Compressor repair or replacement can cost ₹1500 to ₹6000.
