You put your food in the microwave. You set the time. You press start. The light comes on. The plate is turning. But when you take the food out, it is still cold.
This happens a lot. A microwave that runs but does not heat can be confusing. The good news is that the problem is usually one of a few things. Let us talk about them.
This sounds very simple, but many people make this mistake. Check if the power level is set to low. Some microwaves have a power level setting. If someone set it to 10% or 20%, the food will not get hot.
Press the power button on your microwave and see what it shows. Set it to 100% or high power. Try heating a cup of water for one minute. If the water gets hot, your microwave is fine.
Microwaves have small switches inside the door. These switches tell the microwave that the door is closed. When you close the door, the switches press down and the microwave knows it is safe to turn on.
If one of these switches is broken, the microwave will turn on but not heat. This is a safety feature. You cannot fix this easily at home. A technician needs to replace the switch. It costs around ₹300 to ₹800.
The diode is a small part inside the microwave. It changes electricity into the right type of power that the microwave needs to produce heat. If the diode is damaged, the microwave will run but not heat.
This is a common problem in older microwaves. A technician can check the diode with a testing tool. Replacing it costs around ₹400 to ₹1000.
The magnetron is the heart of the microwave. It is the part that actually makes the heat. When the magnetron fails, the microwave will not heat at all. You might hear a humming sound but the food stays cold.
Replacing a magnetron costs around ₹1000 to ₹3000 including labor. In some cases, if the microwave is very old, it might be better to buy a new one. But if your microwave is expensive or has special features, repairing it is worth it.
Signs of a bad magnetron:
The capacitor stores electricity and sends it to the magnetron. If the capacitor is bad, the magnetron does not get enough power to create heat. This is less common but it happens.
A technician can test the capacitor easily. Replacement costs around ₹500 to ₹1500.
A thermal fuse is a safety part. If the microwave gets too hot, the thermal fuse blows and stops the microwave from heating. This can happen if the microwave is used for very long periods or if the cooling fan is not working.
When the thermal fuse blows, the microwave might still have light and sound but no heat. A technician can replace it. It costs around ₹300 to ₹700.
Microwaves have parts inside that hold high voltage even after you unplug them. The capacitor can store electricity for days. Opening a microwave is dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.
Please do not try to open the microwave and fix it yourself unless you have experience with electrical repairs. Always call a trained technician.
